House Rules

Posting:

  1. The DM may post whenever she likes, generally when most players have a chance to respond. The DM will post no later than her scheduled time, unless there are schedule conflicts. In general, I expect to post every other day, unless I'm waiting for crucial player actions or during combat, which I like to post daily.
  2. Players are required to post at least two separate times a week. Players not posting during a 2-week interval are considered to be voluntarily dropping the game. If a player knows he/she is going to be gone, it is his/her responsibility to notify the DM and tell the DM who will be responsible for the character until he/she gets back. The DM will be happy to play any character while a player is away.
  3. When posting, please put your characters name in the subject line after the subject. Also, all posts are to be written in 3rd person past tense.
  4. ICQ Chat: Chat will only be held for an event if all of the PCs involved are present OR have given permission for another player who is present (or me) to use the PC of the missing player OR if I really need to move the game along and a majority of the players are present for the event.
  5. The DM reserves the right to rearrange posts slightly to make the summary post make some sort of sense. She will try to uphold the intent and purpose of your post when so doing. She may also edit or add to your posts to make the summary post more readable.

Behavior:

  1. IC rudeness or harassment is fine. OOC rudeness or evilness will not be tolerated and is grounds for expulsion.
  2. You can, on the other hand can harass the DM all you want. However, she has a temper and may harass you back. <G>
  3. No player shall block another's post or negate another's actions. That is, if Sam picks up the medallion, don't post that George picks up the medallion and examines it; at least not without asking Sam or waiting until Sam puts it back down, if ever.
  4. You cannot post that you affect another PC or any creatures controlled by that PC without the PC's permission, unless you are attacking. Then you must roll to hit. The DM reserves the right to temporarily use pets or followers to further the plot, although not in a way which would be either out of character for the animal used or cause said animal harm of any kind.

Confidentiality:

  1. I will not release any character information to anyone other than you without your permission.
  2. I will not release any player information to anyone other than you without your permission.

Gaining Experience, WPs, and NWPs:

  1. Role-playing. Overall, the most XP you get is for this. Extra awards are given for extremely well-written posts, posts that stimulate others' role-playing, and posts that move the game onward in a constructive manner.
  2. Good ideas. If you come up with stuff no one else comes up with, you'll get XP for it.
  3. Getting stuff. Treasure XP. All treasure XP is divided equally amongst those that helped get it, no matter who ends up with it.
  4. Defeating opponents. This is monster XP basically.

To gain Weapon Profs (WPs) or Non-Weapon Profs (NWPs), you need to start training for them in advance. Then, when you go up a level that gives you an extra WP or NWP slot, you will be ready to get it. So think about this in advance. Otherwise you may be spending a couple months or more game time practicing with a new weapon even though you have a slot open for it.

Psionics:

While I do not allow psionicists, I do allow Wild talents. If you want to test for this and you have Core Rules 2, send me an XPT file for your character and I'll roll. You only get 1 chance for this ever, even if your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Constitution goes up and no matter what level you achieve.

If you don't have Core Rules 2 and want me to check, just ask me to check and I'll roll.

Keep in mind there is a chance something horrible will happen to your character during the test.

If you do end up with 1 or more wild talents, what I will do is make them more storylike in that they won't use PSPs but will be active periodically or, like Precognition, more subject to the DM using your character to forward the plot from time to time.

Spells

  1. Spells need not be chosen ahead of time. However, appropriate time (10 minutes/spell level) must be spent in prayer or meditation to gain the ability to cast them.
  2. If you are a mage, you get spell bonuses based on your Intelligence (Reason), similarly to priests gaining bonus spells for their Wisdom (Intuition). That is, a 13 gives you a bonus 1st level spell, 14 another, 15/16 1 2nd level spell each, 17 a 3rd level spell, and 18 a 4th level spell.
  3. I do require spell components. In addition, a priest must have a holy symbol to regain and cast all spells save Create Holy Symbol. If you did not already have a slot left to cast Create Holy Symbol, it would be another 24 hours before you could pray for additional spells.
  4. Cantrip is an NWP. See Cantrip NWP.
  5. There is only one Read Magic spell. Mulhorandi magic is not unique and the Read Southern Magic spell is not used.
  6. If you go up to a level in which you would gain a new spell level, you get to choose 1 spell of that new level for your spellbook.

Thoughts

While I do allow characters to post their thoughts, I want to keep the game basically an interactive experience that allows anyone present to react to what is happening. Thoughts generally do not do this. So thoughts are allowed but with the following restrictions:

  1. Don't use thoughts to insult or speak badly of another character. Characters should get a chance to rebut that kind of thing. If you have to express your characters thoughts in such a manner, send me the complete post with thoughts; and post the no-thoughts version to the list. Thus it fleshes out the story without harassing someone that isn't allowed to fight back.
  2. The post should have something in it that another character (PC or NPC) can respond to. If it's a soliloquy in your head, it doesn't really count as a post, per se, since no one can legitimately respond to it. It will gain you XP, but you'll still need to do a post that someone can respond to as well.
  3. Anytime your character would think something, but you don't really want that out on the list but you do want it as part of the story, feel free to send me a complete post privately that includes your character's thoughts. Thus you are fleshing out the story but not necessarily sharing with everyone, since only a few actually read the summary posts anyway.
